Yes, McCain is pro-Israel, but...

 SAN DIEGO—Very simply, Senator McCain is pro-Israel. There is no question that his support and positions are acceptable and helpful to those of us who are “pro-Israel." He has a good relationship with the Jewish communities in Arizona. (I attempted to contact Jewish community relations professionals in Arizona to identify programs or projects which the Senator has championed that benefited the Jewish communities in the state, but was not able to substantiate a list of programs.)
During his Senate career, he was a maverick at times. I liked John McCain much better in 2000. Unfortunately, the emphasis is on the past tense. Things change when you have to court religious conservatives. In 2000, John McCain, sharp tongued and sincere said what he really felt about social conservative ministers. I would have liked to see McCain run as an independent and pick a strong independent minded Democrat like Joe Lieberman to run on his ticket. This was not to be.
John McCain has a love/hate relationship with social conservatives. As the national candidate of the Republican party, he feels that he needs them, not only their votes but also their resources and passion in order to win election. That makes moderates of both parties and independents for sure very uncomfortable. Social conservatives have held sway in the party since the 1980’s. Ralph Reed, one of the architects of the Christian Coalition assured these conservatives of this central role in the party. McCain could have picked a running mate with more clout, more experience, more depth such as former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge. But he felt that he had to choose someone to appease this wing of the party. It’s a group that has been making McCain jump through many hoops and over many hurdles for their support. I don’t think that Senator McCain relishes having to woo social conservatives, but he knows that he has to and in doing so has sold out his soul for their political support – their passionate support. And if he wins, they will continue to pounce on him for more appointments, more strident positions – or they will not support him in his re-election in four years. I would have liked for Senator McCain to have told them to pound sand and that he could win without their help. But that was not to be.
The year 2000 was the year of the Bob Jones University controversy. Remember when then Candidate Bush visited this iconic site of social conservatism? This was the university that forbade interracial dating. At the time, CNN reported that McCain said he does not mind "going any place where people have views that I find hateful" -- but "when I go there, I'm going to tell them exactly what I think of them." And he added that he would have told the Bob Jones audience that "they ought to get out of the 16th century and into the 21st century."
In 2000, McCain termed the Reverend Jerry Falwell and Reverend Pat Robertson agents of intolerance. But on May 13, 2006, there was Senator McCain marching side by side with Rev. Falwell onto the stage at the Liberty University’s basketball arena where McCain gave the commencement speech.
And it gets worse. Candidate McCain had to seek the support of some unsavory religious leaders. One was Reverend John Hagee, the pastor of the Cornerstone Church in Texas. Hagee’s views are off the wall and considered anti- Catholic. In fact, Catholic League president Bill Donohue said, “There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church. For example, he likes calling it 'The Great Whore,' an 'apostate church,' the 'anti-Christ,' and a 'false cult system' . . . .”
And then there was the courting of mega-church leader Rev. Rod Parsley of the World Harvest Church in Columbus. The reverend simply compared Planned Parenthood to the Ku Klux Klan, saying that its goal is to "eliminate" blacks according to the Washington Post.
McCain did eventually turn back the endorsements of these religious leaders. But they illustrate the problem with courting religious conservatives.
There is a great problem that we in the Jewish community have with evangelicals. Matthew Avery Sutton, assistant professor of history at Washington State University provides the following perspective: “On the one hand, evangelicals love the Jews, believing that they are God’s chosen people and they have an inalienable right to a major chunk of the Middle East. Ministers like Hagee are therefore the strongest supporters of Israel in the United States. On the other hand, ministers of doom often see Jews as little more than pawns in the grand, end-times scheme. At the root of their strident Zionism is the conviction that Jews will suffer horribly at the hands of the Antichrist, and will inadvertently provoke a world war culminating in the battle of Armageddon and the return of Jesus. For evangelicals, Zionism is a means to an end, one that results in a millennial paradise for evangelicals (and those Jews who convert to Christianity), and the fires of hell for Muslims and everyone else.”
Thus the reason to be leery of any candidate who aggressively courts religious conservative leaders.
The problem has not gone away. At a recent McCain rally in Iowa, Arnold Conrad, former pastor of Grave Evangelical Free Church added another layer to this problem. As the Wall Street Journal reported, Conard said: “There are millions of people around this world praying to their god - whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah - that his [McCain’s] opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you would guard your own reputation because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than you if that happens. So I pray that you will step forward and honor your own name in all that happens between now and Election Day." Hmmm. “Their” god. Is HaShem their God or only ours? Sounds like we’re second class citizens again.
In his defense, Senator McCain stated back in March 2008 that he “doesn't agree with everyone who endorses him.” So, the question should be, just as Senator McCain has said that he doesn’t agree with all of his endorsers, why should this not apply to Senator Obama as well? It’s probably not a question that the Republican Jewish Coalition cares to answer.

U.S. Presidents as seen by 'verbivore' Richard Lederer

 ESCONDIDO, California—If you are what would be described as a “verbivore,” Palomar College was the place for you on Monday evening October 20, 2008. In the words of Dr. Richard Lederer (PhD in Linguistics), “carnivores eat meat; herbivores eat veggies, and verbivores devour words”.
Lederer devoted his talk to trivia related to almost all of the 42 men who occupied the White house. I say 42 men because one individual, as explained by Lederer, Grover Cleveland, served two times, not consecutively, separated by Benjamin Harrison, and is generally counted as being President twice.
The program was fascinating because it dealt with many facts and incidents in the lives of some of our Presidents that are never mentioned in the American History classes that are taught at either the high school or college level. Not only was it informative, but humorous as well.
Clarence Darrow once said “As a young boy I was told that anyone could be President. Now as an elder I can believe it.” Dr. Lederer’s book, Presidential Trivia: the Feats, Fates, Families, Foibles, and Firsts of our American Presidents illustrates, this is clearly the case.
Looks played an important part in some cases. Warren Harding, “a good looking dude," was swept into office by the vote of 60% of the women voting. This was the first time, 1921, that women were given the right to vote. Another “good looking dude” was Thomas Jefferson. We think of George Washington as he looked before tooth decay caught him and left him with one tooth.
There is a little known story about Ronald Reagan who became our 40th President. Prior to becoming President, he had appeared in 54 films. He tried out for number 55 but didn’t make it. It was about a man running for the presidency. He was rejected by the director to play the part because the director thought he didn’t look presidential enough.
Lederer went on to tell of the rich Presidents, the Roosevelts, Herbert Hoover, and the poor Presidents. In the latter class was Andrew Johnson who became President after Lincoln’s assassination. He had no education at all and was an apprentice tailor. Even when he became President, he continued to actually custom make his own clothes. This clearly shows that anyone can be President of the United States.
He also told the how the very popular children’s cuddly Teddy Bear was born. In November 1902 Teddy Roosevelt went south to arbitrate a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana. While there he went on a hunt with his hosts. While on the hunt they caught a bear cub. They tied the bear cub to a tree and offered TR the opportunity to “shoot the bear.” He refused saying “if I did I could not look my boys in the eyes.” A cartoon was made about this event. This was picked up by a couple in the business of selling children’s toys, and the rest is history. Eventually it led to the founding of the Ideal Toy Company. The teddy bear was very active in TR’s 1904 presidential campaign.
In 1907 Teddy Roosevelt went to an exposition and went to a booth that was serving coffee. He took one sip and said “this is good to the last drop”. As you might recognize, it is still the trademark slogan of Maxwell House Coffee.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Lederer went on to speak of many other Presidents and some of the events that occurred in their time in office. For example, the youngest was not John F. Kennedy who was 43 years & 7 months when he took office, but Theodore Roosevelt who was 42 years and 10 months when he took office after McKinley was assassinated.
Concerning the current Presidential campaign his only comment was that “this is the largest age gap between two presidential candidates in history – 27 ½ years.”
Lederer, a member of the Jewish community, has written over 30 books including Anguished English, Get Thee to a Punnery, and a whole host of others which can be found listed on his website www.verbivore.com. It is also the gateway to many other fascinating facts about Richard Lederer.
The one sentence which I feel best sums up his contribution to the English language is from his website. He wrote “Ours is the only language in which you drive in a parkway and park in a drive way and your nose can run and your feet can smell.

Bleeding Kansas powerful in juxtaposition with U.S. election

 SAN DIEGO—Anything that threatens the status quo is controversial. Proposition 8 for example seems to threaten those who think marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Opponents are using scare tactics and lies to frighten those who don’t agree. The campaign is similar to those run last century by bigots who thought interracial marriage would wreck the fabric of our society and passed laws subsequently overturned by courts.
Once upon a time there were laws that allowed only men to vote. Laws against unionizing, for example brought some of the worst punishment to union organizers. The Civil Rights Movement that broke down barriers of separate but equal ended one of the darkest times in our history.
Our very own Emma Goldman born of Orthodox Jewish parentage in the Russian province of Kovno in 1869 and who immigrated to this country was one of those who fought the status quo. She had her shares of ups and downs as she saw how working conditions oppressed vulnerable citizens who had no voice: children and women.
After she arrived in America, and worked in factories she saw first hand the poor conditions. She certainly had her ups and downs in her early 20’s and because of an association with another anarchist Alexander Berkman her reputation preceded her. Berkman was arrested and sent to prison after he shot Henry Frick of the Carnegie Steel Company for resisting unions at the plant somet. Goldman had advocated unionization.
The following year, Goldman was sent off to prison for allegedly urging the unemployed to ‘take by force’ the food they required. Considered an anarchist herself for her political activism, she wrote and spoke on many issues such as free speech, women’s suffrage free love, homosexuality, capitalism and militarism.
For Goldman, her colorful career brought her fame of a negative nature to this government. Fighting for causes of justice and equality is always a risk and while she remained an anarchist all her life, she never shirked or turned her back on her ideas even though she was denied her citizenship on technical grounds and she was barred from this country.
John Brown, Connecticut born became interested in the abolition movement in 1835. In 1855 he and several of his sons moved to Kansas. A year later they went on a killing spree murdering five men who supported slavery but owned none. And so it went. He collected money while on the run in order to have a colony for runaway slaves. His Harpers Ferry raid is what he is best known for. As John Brown was being let to the gallows for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, he said, “I John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood."
Unfortunately the methods used on both sides were abominable, ergo “Bleeding Kansas” became the watchword for the slavery struggle in Kansas throughout the 1850’ and ‘60’s as the death toll rose with all the violence erupting over the state’s status.
The state was deeply divided between abolitionists and pro slavery. It wasn’t child’s play, it was life and death. Most of the good folks of Kansas were not concerned about the slavery issue. They wanted Kansas to be a free state and those who were pro slavery didn’t own them. When the Kansas/Nebraska Act was established dividing the area into two separate territories, Nebraska and Kansas, Nebraska was deemed a free state and the other, Kansas, a pro slave state. Unfortunately, it brought more heartache than was anticipated because of the arbitrary dividing line between north and south.
When the citizens of Kansas came to vote (and the Congress left it up to the settlers themselves not Congress) to decide the fate of the new territory the status of the state was in jeopardy and the elections became so tainted and subverted that the ‘flames of war’ leading up to the Civil War were already being stoked. This became all too evident to the already settlers because of the influx of both Abolitionists from the North and Pro slavery forces with Free Staters stuck in the middle.
So for the characters in Kathryn Walat’s new play Bleeding Kansas, making its west Coast premiere, and in an emotionally packed and timely production put on by Moxie Theatre at the home of the Diversionary Theatre on Park Blvd., rattle snakes, snake oil peddlers, Harriet Beecher Stow, bible thumping, mysterious burnings, killing and lynching, John Brown, early childhood deaths and class warfare were the realities for those living in Kansas in 1854.
Our story begins when Hannah Rose Allen (Jennifer Eve Thorn) along with a group of friends from Boston settle in Kansas. Hannah is a schoolteacher and an abolitionist, both beliefs fraught with danger among the residents of the unruly and lawless fledgling state. Juxtaposed along side Hannah are Kitty Clarke (Jo Anne Glover) and her husband George, (David S. Humphrey) whose homestead Hannah happens on. The Clark’s for all-intents and purposes were neutral but they leaned toward the free state ideals.
Presented in a series of vignettes the play opens with Hannah (Jennifer Eve Thorn is bigger than life) talking to her sister back in Boston as if reading a letter she wrote (this strategy serves the playwright well as she uses it to show the audience where and how Hanna’s life has changed from one of starry eyed optimism to self survival skills) telling her about her journey West, and what she anticipates when she gets settled. This is our introduction to Hannah, a bright, optimistic, religious and liberated woman.
On the other side of the isle, Kitty and George, free soilers, who are struggling to make a go of a homestead whose soil is barely fit for farming. Theirs is a story of devotion, fortitude, (especially on Kitty’s part) and sadness since the death of their little girl on their journey to Kansas from Indiana.
Ms. Glover’s Kitty is all determination and concentration in making a home for herself and George in this new beginning. She is tough, realistic and no nonsense. George, on the other hand is more of a dreamer and idealist who is in constant need of prodding to build fences, fill gaps in their log cabin to keep out the elements, plant crops and lend moral support to his strong willed wife. Their one closest neighbor is Josiah (Mark Petrich), a nice guy, but one who leans more toward the pro-slavery thinking.
Soon into the play we meet up with some of the more unsavory characters who will in the end, turn the state upside down and affect greatly the lives of the three main players. Edwin Redpath or Red (Christopher Buess) is one of the most intimidating of the outlaw faction as his character menaces not only Hannah but has a devastating consequence on the George.
Red is one of those hooligans you don’t want to meet in a dark alley. He’s wild, uneducated, a misinformed redneck and full of mischief. He’d just as soon kill you than talk to you. He, along with his band of thugs (all the male actors have dual roles) stuff the ballot boxes, destroy property and intimidate for the heck of it the good citizens of Kansas. Violence is what they create and as the play progresses we learn, through these characters, just what took place in Kansas before it finally became a state. Once decided, Kansas could a deciding vote in the U.S. Senate--either pro or con slavery for the rest of America.
Walat’s play attempts to bring out each side of the argument and manages to throw a little quasi-romantic drama into the equation. It develops between Hannah and Red and is intriguing to watch unfold. While it was rather predictable from the outset, it nonetheless presented a real life situation where two people from opposite sides of an argument can still come together on a personal level.
Moxie Theatre under the deft direction of one of its founding mothers, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, has brought this timely play to the fore at another important time in American history. Jennifer Eve Thorn is a standout as the proud and determined Hannah. As mentioned, she presents a larger than life portrait of the American spirit. Joanne Glover, a multi-talented actor breathes life into her Kitty character. She’s spunky and true to her determination to overcome her dislike for her new digs while supporting her loving husband.
Davis S. Humphrey is a gentle giant as he soothes his wife’s broken heart and attempts to make things right for her in their new homestead. Humphrey, whom I remember as a musical theatre star from his long involvement in Forever Plaid, is just as sincere as the loving husband as he was as one of the Plaids. He also makes a fine John Brown character in his dual role.
Bluess gives a standout performance as both Red, the tough guy who has a soft spot in his heart for Hannah and the snake like villain stirring commotions, stealing and killing as he sees fit. Mark Petrich’s Josiah is the one weak link in this strong cast. While his role as the neighbor who is helpful and friendly but wishy/washy on the slave issue is important, on opening night he lacked the credibility to make it convincing.
Adding considerably to the production were Jerry Sonnenberg’s scenic design of real dirt covering the stage and the side wall of a log cabin, and beautiful skyscape in the background, Jason Bieber’s lighting design, Jennifer Brown Gittings contrasting period costumes for Hannah and Kitty and Jason Connors, and sound design with Erica Erenyi playing Connor’s musical compositions on the cello as both background music of traditional folk songs of the antebellum era. Add that together with a convincing, well directed and acted cast and it adds up to a stimulating evening of theatre.
By the time you read this review, we will be winding down one of the longest (or so it seems) election campaigns seasons for choosing the next president of the United States. After the slavery issue was put to rest (I would have hoped) we now have the first African American citizen running for the highest office in the land.
Unfortunately, the ugly race card has reared its nasty head once again and many will not be pulling that lever for a Black man.
Bleeding Kansas continues through Nov. 2 at Diversionary theatre.

A modern dance group is being formed under the expert supervision of Mrs. Lilo Berger. The first session will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening, at the Temple Center. Ladies of all ages are cordially invited to attend these delightful classes. Phone F-0171 if you desire further details.

The Youth Canteens are clicking again. Next one will be run off during the Passover vacation. “A surprise program is in line for all,” promises Matt Strauss, president of the Young Peoples League, sponsors of the dance. More details in the mail.

Daily camp outings are going to be held more often now that spring is here. Since April 21-29 is American Youth Week, we are planning to have our next outing on April 29.

The City Softball League will take shape this Thursday evening, March 30 at the J.C.C. office. “Every man or boy who wants to play on a Softball team will be given a chance to do so,” announces Lou Mogy, Chairman.

The figure control class has scheduled its next meeting for Thursday evening, March 28, at the Temple Center. Ladies from 15-50 are invited to benefit from the skillful instruction of Mrs. Lilo Berger. Starting in April, classes will be held on Wednesday evenings 7:30-8:30. Take advantage of them—they are really lots of fun.
Local Leaders Attend Men’s Club Conference in L.A.

A vital role was played by the Tifereth Israel delegation, comprised of Alex J. Newman, Zell Greenberg, Moe Hershey, and Sid Smith, in organizing the Conference of Jewish Men’s Clubs within the United Jewish Synagogue at a panel discussion and brunch held Sunday, March 12, at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles.
Reporting on the spirited activity of the Tifereth Israel Men’s Club, of which he is retiring president, newly elected Congregational president Newman related how the Men’s Club has been instrumental in drawing many more families into the sphere of the synagogue.
“Many of our prospective members of the Men’s Club come to us saying that they are free thinkers and admit that they are Jews in name only. Their sole objective in joining seems to be the social activity of the club and yet, within a short time and without any organized persuasion, many of these men have become a member of the Congregation, their wives and families actively engaged in the mainstream of Tifereth Israel,” Newman said.
In citing the great success of the Men’s Club in its many social affairs and serious endeavors, including the support of the Youth League, Newman credited the Sisterhood of Tifereth Israel with setting a pace and example of organizational growth and achievement.
Greenberg, recently elected president of the Men’s Club, Hershey and Smith took a keen part in the discussion which generally reflected Newman’s plea for greater unity and cooperative effort between the Men’s Clubs of the Region.
Chairing the panel discussion attended by 48 presidents and members of the Men’s Clubs in 10 Southern Calif. Congregations affiliated with the United Synagogue, was Harry Robert Smith of the Westchester Congregation in Los Angeles.
Featured speakers on the panel in addition to Newman were Harold Easton, So. Calif. Regional President of the United Synagogue; Nathan Gillin, a member of the National Board of Directors of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs; Warren Miller, President of the Men’s Club of the Valley Jewish Community Center and Rabbi Leon Rosenberg of the Westchester Congregation and Men’s Club, advisor for the Region, who referred to the Men’s Clubs as “the hands of the Synagogue” and an integral part of all congregational activity.
Dr. David Aronson, president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America and Visiting Professor of Rabbinics at the University of Judaism, was an honored guest and spoke briefly of the progress made by Men’s Clubs in his home area of Minneapolis. The noted Rabbi recommended a unified venture by clubs of this Region in holding a three-day institute and also conducting summer camp sessions for devotional, educational purposes, as successfully done in the East.
Unanimously agreed upon by those in attendance at the March 12 meeting was a planning session to be held at the Fairfax Temple in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 26, 11 to 1 p.m. Participating will be the presidents of all Men’s Clubs in the Region, 22 in all and two other representatives to be elected or appointed by the President. Named chairman pro tem of the Conference was Nate Lemler of the Southwest B’nai Zion Congregation and Lew Fink of the Burbank Jewish Center was named Secretary.
While other members of the San Diego delegation returned home Sunday, Newman stayed in Los Angeles for the meeting Monday night of the Board of Overseers of the University of Judaism.
Toy Packing Party

Results of the Toy shower recently held by Mrs. Lou Moorsteen were so gratifying that she had a “toy-packing party” in her home in order to get them ready for shipping to Israel.
Almost 200 baby and children garments were brought in and more than one thousand toys (counting every small item) arrived.
In addition to this, Jr. Matrons sent a check for $25 and many people who had no toys or clothing to give, sent in checks and $1 bills. With this money, playground equipment, such as baseballs, bats, basketballs and baskets, soccer balls, a punching bag, with gloves, table tennis set, etc., were purchased, to be used in the schools in Camp Rosh Ha Ayin, where 16,000 Yemenites reside. Mrs. Moorsteen says she wishes she could be present to see the happy faces when the toys and clothing arrive. They are to go to Mr. Izak Azissoff, director.
Helping the Morsteens to pack the articles last Saturday night were Betty and Leonard Slater, who came down from Los Angeles, especially for this; Chicky and Ed Breier, Marcela and Sidney Coyne, Jennie Burnett and Helen Frances Bland… Mrs. Moorsteen wishes herewith to express her appreciation and heartfelt thanks to all who donated and assisted her with the drive. Five fully crammed barrels and one large packing box, will be aboard a ship leaving from San Pedro harbor, April 10th.

Sadie Rothberger, United Jewish Fund Chairman for the Bay City Chapter of B’nai B’rith, has arranged an interesting program for April 10th, to be held at Tifereth Israel Synagogue. A film on United Jewish Fund work will be presented by Morris Douglas. Refreshments will be served. A welcome is extended to all.
Ada Randall, Hillel Chairman for the Bay City Chapter, and Bess Borushek, Chairman for the Birdie Stodel Chapter, are participating in the model Seder prepared by Hillel students, to held on the campus March 28th.
